June 8 – August 10, 2012

Read and discuss a new type of book, show off your pictures of Boulder City at night, and learn new things.

How this works:

1) Each week read a fiction and/or a nonfiction book from the following categories.  You can enter once each week for fiction and once for nonfiction.

• Week 1, June 8-15:  Read a Historical fiction book, or a nonfiction book on World History.
• Week 2, June 16-22:  Read a Mystery, or a nonfiction book on True Crime.
• Week 3, June 23-29:  Read a Science Fiction book, or a nonfiction book on Technology.
• Week 4, June 30-July 6:  Read a Thriller, or a nonfiction book on Spies or Espionage.
• Week 5, July 7-13:  Read a fiction book of Short Stories, or a nonfiction book on Cookery.
• Week 6, July 14-20:  Read a Romance novel, or a nonfiction book on Nevada.
• Week 7, July 21-27:  Read a Western fiction book, or a nonfiction book on American History.
• Week 8, July 28-August 4:  Read a Fantasy fiction book, or a nonfiction Biography.
• Week 9, August 5-10:  Read an Animal Mystery, or a nonfiction book on Animals.

2) Pick up an entry slip at the circulation desk, starting June 8th.  You can get these anytime during the week.

3) Read, and hopefully enjoy, your book.

4) Fill out your entry slip, and turn it in at the reference desk, by 5pm each Friday.  You’ll receive a small prize for each entry.  Each entry will go in the weekly drawing, and the grand prize drawing in August.

5) We’ll draw the winning entries for weekly prizes on Saturdays.  The final weekly prize, and the grand prize, will be drawn on Saturday, August 11th.  The grand prize is a Sony Wifi Touch ebook reader, donated by Sony.

Computers 101: This class is targeted for beginning computer users.  It will provide basic instruction on what a computer is, how to use a mouse and keyboard, and about the Windows XP environment.

Internet Basics:  This class will provide an overview of the internet including searching Google and using the BC Library Website.

Email Basics: We will be exploring Google’s Gmail.  This course will cover how to get an email address, how to send an email, replying & forwarding messages, adding attachments, and other features of Gmail.

Advanced Email: This class will cover things like how to organize your email, settings, filters, uploading and downloading attachments.

Word Processing with Microsoft Word: In this class we will cover things like how to create documents, format and edit text, adjust margins, and save, print, and open files.

Advanced Word: This course will cover things like how to create, use, and edit styles, the picture toolbar, headers and footers, and some page layout tools.

To Freeze your Hold Items:

1. Go to our web site at www.bclibrary.org
2. Choose “Search Our Catalog“
3. On the right side of the screen, choose “My Account”
4. On the next screen, fill in BOTH:
   Your Library Card Number AND Your Pin Number
5. Click Submit
6. On the left side of the screen you should see a message listing the number of requests you currently have. Click on that message.
7. On the next screen you may need to scroll down to see a list of Requests you have placed. That list will show you what number you are in the Holds Queue OR give you a date when the Request is due to be cleared.  That list also has a column titled FREEZE.
8. Select, but clicking on the appropriate box in the FREEZE column, any items which would seem likely to be delivered to BCL during the time you were gone. We advise that it is best to FREEZE all of your requests. However if you are number 118 on a list and you are going to be gone only a week, a FREEZE is probably not necessary for that item.
   
9. Select UPDATE at the bottom of the screen.
10. When you return from your travels, you may follow the same basic procedure to UNFREEZE(or release) those items and you will be returned to your place in the Hold Queue rather than having to be placed at the bottom of the Queue again.There are some  cases when the FREEZE does not work.  If, for instance, you are the next in line and the process of fulfilling your request has already begun, you will not be able to FREEZE that request. In that case, you may have to ask us to be put back on the Holds list for that item. In most of these instances, the computer will tell you that you can not put a FREEZE on that item.

Kindle users can browse the collection of eBooks from a PC or Mac, check out the titles using their BC or LVCCLD library card, and select “Get for Kindle” to deliver the eBooks to their Kindle Devices.  This includes any devices running free Kindle Apps (PC or Mac, Android™ devices, and iPhone® or iPad®).

Look for books with the Kindle Book   graphic!
